The first glimpse of weekly college football rankings is out. The Amway Coaches Poll wasn’t awful, but it needs some major corrections. We rerank the top 25.
I love college football, but I am genuinely frustrated after seeing the college football polls each week. The recently released Amway Coaches poll drew the same feelings of frustration. So, every week I will be releasing Wrighster’s Top 25. The top 25 as it should be. I’m sure you will agree. Here they are!
No. 25 to No. 20 – You get an Attaboy
25. Oregon
24. Kansas St
23. Texas
22. Virginia Tech
21. West Virginia
20. Washington St.
“Attaboy”- a term used by coaches to deliver shallow praise of an effort that is above what they expected you were capable, yet below the standard. If you are a player and you constantly get attaboys, you won’t be starting. If you are a coach, and you consistently have attaboy seasons, you will soon be replaced by a contender coach.
This part of the list is tricky. There are many teams that will occupy these spots during the season as the lower tier churns and cycles through the polls. Teams like Texas and Oregon are coming off multiple disappointing seasons. Being in the Top 25 will be a win and welcomed sight for the fan base, boosters, and university.
For Washington State and West Virginia, both of whom have veteran head coaches, hovering in the 20-25 range will be a disappointment and get a whispered attaboy. It’s always hard to gauge what reasonable expectations should be for Kansas State because the stakes don’t seem to be as high. Bill Snyder seems to have no pressure to win a National Championship, yet has ultimate job security.
Virginia Tech is coming off a successful 10-4 season but they were absolutely decimated on both sides of the ball by graduation and the NFL Draft. A season in the 20-25 ranges could still mean winning the ACC Coastal division and solid second season for Justin Fuente.
