Quarterback

Starting quarterback: Quinten Dormady
Backup: Jarrett Guarantano

There’s a new offensive coordinator in town and Larry Scott has one major job to do before the season begins: name a starting quarterback. Losing Joshua Dobbs was a tough blow for the team following the season because he meant so much for the program’s resurgence.

Returning, though, is junior Quinten Dormady who had 148 passing yards last season as the team’s backup quarterback, completing 11-of-17 passes. He showed poise in the backup role, although very limited, and has been impressing in fall camp.

However, he’s had to fend off a surge from highly-touted redshirt freshman Jarrett Guarantano who could bring that dual-threat ability that Dobbs had to the Volunteers’ offense. In my estimation, he has the higher ceiling of the two quarterbacks, but it looks like Tennessee might go the safe route to start, picking Dormady for Week 1.

Just because Tennessee picks Dormady early on doesn’t mean that Guarantano isn’t going to get a fair shot. The former No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the 2016 class will be waiting for his opportunity and when he gets a chance in a live-game situation, he will impress.
