Boise State Football: 5 reasons why Broncos will struggle in 2017
By Zach Bigalke
Boise State football fancies its chances of reaching a New Year’s Six bowl again this season. Here are five reasons why the Broncos will struggle instead.
For the past decade, Boise State has stood as the gold standard of mid-major programs. The two-time BCS Buster also earned the first Group of Five automatic berth into a New Year’s Six bowl when the College Football Playoff was inaugurated in 2014.
No longer held to a standard of perfection, it looked like the Broncos might enter a golden age of annual participation in major bowl games. But navigating the Mountain West proved harder than expected each of the past two years. Instead of taking on college football’s bluebloods, the Broncos’ newest tradition has been missing the MWC championship game.
As they do every year, Broncos fans are holding out hope that they return to the top of the Group of Five heap in 2017. But they will have to do so with new starters all over the place, on both sides of the ball. While powerhouse programs can retool instead of rebuilding, that is easier said than done at a mid-major school. This holds true even for Cinderella favorites like Boise State.
Before they can even dream of a return to New Year’s Six contention, Boise State must first figure out how to get back to the top of the Mountain West. Without a conference title, everything else is moot. Click ahead to see five reasons why Boise State will stink in 2017.
