Every elite college football program claims that they produce the best defensive backs in the country, but as the 2017 season approaches who’s the new DBU?

Schools have been declaring that they produce the best defensive backs in the nation for decades. Universities like Florida State, Miami, and Texas have all attempted to lay claim to the DB throne, posturing on the backs of legendary players like Deon Sanders, Andre Rolle and Earl Thomas to achieve defensive superiority.

These defensive backs helped to build collegiate dynasties that shaped the college football landscape for decades, some of which still remain relevant to this day. However, one of the most exciting parts of the collegiate game is the constant turnover at every position.

In college football, players, coaches and coordinators are constantly coming and going, which makes it hard for any given school to stay at the top forever, so as we inch closer and closer to the 2017 college football season it’s worth asking the question: which college football team currently produces the best cornerbacks and safeties in the nation?

We live in an era where wide receivers are bigger, faster and stronger than ever before, and football coaches at all levels are building their playbooks around spread offense concepts. Now, more than ever before, having a set of skilled defensive backs could very well be the difference between an early vacation and a spot in the College Football Playoff.

While dozens of schools have produced pro bowl caliber corners and safeties over the years, few have been able to consistently produce the kind of quantity and quality needed to become a defensive back institution.

Of the 128 college football teams that currently play at the Division 1 FBS level, only five can boast at least 10 defensive back alumni on current NFL rosters. With that in mind the question needs to be asked; which school is the new DBU?
