Defensive Line

Starting tackles: John Atkins, Trenton Thompson
Backups: DaQuan Hawkins-Muckle, Julian Rochester

Most of the defense returns from a season ago, which makes the Bulldogs that much scarier of a threat to Alabama’s SEC throne. In fact, all 11 starters return, but only 10 are projected to start this season for the Bulldogs. We start at defensive tackle with junior Trenton Thompson. He was second on the team with 64 tackles and had 9.5 tackles for loss and five sacks for a true breakout season. At nose tackle, senior John Atkins looks to build on a decent season.

Sophomore Julian Rochester had 36 tackles and two sacks last season, making him one heck of a backup tackle. He could be a breakout star to watch in SEC play. Also playing the understudy role at tackle is junior DaQuan Hawkins-Muckle who didn’t record a sack or tackle for loss in 2016, but had 18 total takedowns.

Starting end: Jonathan Ledbetter
Backup: David Marshall

As the Bulldogs play more of a 3-4 defense, there’s only one more starting down lineman to mention and that’s defensive end Jonathan Ledbetter. The junior is the only non-returning starter to be projected with the ones on the two-deep. He had 24 tackles and a sack last season and will be backed up by sophomore David Marshall. These two could be interchangeable as the latter finished with 26 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 2016.
