UCLA Football: Top 5 breakout candidates for 2017
Caleb Wilson is one of the more interesting players in college football. He played quarterback at the high school level and didn’t receive much attention from Division 1 programs. He decided to walk-on and move over to tight end as a freshman at USC. However, he redshirted in his first season and then decided to transfer to crosstown rival UCLA.
Obviously going from USC to UCLA, or vice versa, will draw some controversy, but Wilson wasn’t regarded as a guy who’d play much for the Trojans.
However, UCLA gave him a shot to prove himself at tight end in 2016. He did just that, catching 16 passes for 220 yards, including a career-high four receptions against his former team, USC. He played well as a freshman for the Bruins and is entering the 2017 season as the projected starter.
What a rise from unknown quarterback recruit to starting collegiate tight end for UCLA. Austin Roberts will likely split time with him at tight end, but Wilson is one of those guys that can exceed expectations, and he’s done just that his entire playing career.
