It has been three years since Boise State football won the Mountain West. We break down each game on the Broncos schedule for 2017.
Bryan Harsin didn’t really accomplish much as a Boise State quarterback. Harsin was a little-used backup in the late 1990s, back when the program was first emerging as a mid-major threat after transitioning from the I-AA ranks. As a college quarterback, Harsin completed just 11 of his 39 total attempts between 1996 and 1999 for 155 total yards. He had one interception and one touchdown pass.
Coming out of college, he spent a year at Eastern Washington before returning to his alma mater as a graduate assistant. Working first under Dan Hawkins and then Chris Petersen, Harsin worked his way through the ranks to become the Broncos offensive coordinator from 2006 to 2010. Moving on from Boise, Harsin took the offensive coordinator job at Texas before landing his first head gig at Arkansas State.
In one year with the Red Wolves, Harsin led Arkansas State to a share of the Sun Belt title and a third straight bowl appearance. Then Petersen left Boise State for the Washington job, and Harsin’s alma mater came calling on their former benchwarmer to replace the legend.
His first year at the helm in Boise couldn’t have gone better for Harsin. The Broncos went 10-2 to win the MWC Mountain, then knocked off Fresno State for the Mountain West title and took down Arizona for their third Fiesta Bowl win in three tries. Boise State has been trying in vain to return to a New Year’s Six game ever since after failing to win the MWC each of the past two years.
