It seems like inexplicable conference losses have become an annual tradition for Boise State. Last year it was a two-point defeat against Wyoming in Laramie that prevented the Broncos from playing for the MWC title. Rather than Boise State, the Cowboys were the MWC Mountain representative in San Diego for the Mountain West championship game.

It all came down to a safety with less than two minutes remaining in the contest. Wyoming defensive tackle Chase Appleby got through the Broncos offensive line and sacked Brett Rypien, forcing a fumble that rolled out the back of the endzone for the winning points. It was the first time the Cowboys had ever won against Boise State in 11 tries.

The Pokes have been growing steadily under head coach Craig Bohl. With an experienced returning defense and Josh Allen back for one more year at quarterback, Wyoming will once again be a contender in the MWC Mountain.

Final: Boise State 46, Wyoming 44 (3OT) (6-1, 3-0 MWC)

The 60 minutes of regulation play won’t be enough to decide this pitched divisional battle in Laramie. Both teams lost their star running backs, and the passing games will likely take center stage. Last year’s game looked like it was headed to overtime until Appleby’s fumble won the game. This time the teams will make up for it with an instant classic that goes several overtimes. Both teams will score in the third overtime, but Wyoming will fail on its two-point attempt.
