College football season is upon us once more as South Florida football meets San Jose State in their season opener on Saturday.
It might not be the beginning of the marquee Power-5 matchups that college football fans have been anxiously awaiting for, however, college football is finally here. South Florida football takes on San Jose State in a lopsided matchup to kick off the 2017 college football season.
New Bulls head coach Charlie Strong will be making his first appearance on the sideline since being unceremoniously dismissed from the University of Texas. Hot-shot Tom Herman has since taken the reigns in Austin, leaving Strong an afterthought on the national stage. That could change on Saturday.
Strong was once thought of like Herman as the next up-and-coming coach. His brief tenure at Texas didn’t turn out like he would have hoped, but he’s still as qualified as a coach as he was three years ago when he took that job. What will his first game with the Bulls look like?
1. USF scores 80 points
The San Jose State Spartans made the transition from the WAC to the Mountain West in 2013. In those four seasons since they have yet to finish better than .500. That’s in large part due to the lack of depth on defense. It’s understandable, given that they’re a lower tier non-Power 5 school. But that lack is of no concern for the Bulls. Instead, they’ll take advantage of the porous Trojan defense and look to make a statement from the first whistle.
The Trojans finished 2016 with No. 103 scoring defense in the nation. That equates to a shade under five touchdowns allowed every game. Compare that to a South Florida team that scored more than 43 points a game and finished as the fourth best scoring offense in 2017. It’s going to be a rout.
