Florida transfer quarterback Will Grier gets his first action on the field for West Virginia football for the first time since 2015.

The hype train surrounding Will Grier gained momentum. West Virginia did not have a quarterback as good last year. Skyler Howard led the Mountaineers to their first 10-win season since joining the Big 12. Grier can take them to the next level.

The Florida transfer sat out the 2016 season. He was suspended from Florida because of a failed drug test. The Gator offense has not been the same without him. West Virginia reaps the rewards of his mistake.

Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are the favorites to win the Big 12. West Virginia will compete for the title. Head coach Dana Holgorsen got a contract extension during the offseason that could help. West Virginia has not finished in top two since they joined the Big 12.

Virginia Tech is a tough first opponent. The Mountaineers face them at a neutral site in Landover, MD. Both teams are ranked in the top 25. West Virginia is the higher ranked of the two teams. The Hokies are favored to win.

Grier is a better quarterback than Virginia Tech’s freshman QB Josh Jackson. Not playing since 2015 could bring some rust. Shaking that rust is huge for Grier. A victory over Virginia Tech establishes Grier and the Mountaineers as a Big 12 contender.

The surrounding weapons for West Virginia are solid. Running back Justin Crawford is underrated. Receiver Ka’Raun White is a great weapon. Grier has plenty of people to throw to. Holgorsen has all the pieces in place for a good offense.
