With the Cleveland Browns seemingly endless quarterback merry-go-round landing on DeShone Kizer, here’s why he may just be the right choice.

There is no doubt that the Cleveland Browns have had some of the worst luck when it comes to quarterbacks over the last decade. To put it in perspective, the Browns have started 17 quarterbacks since 2007, while the New England Patriots have started four.

While the amount of quarterbacks a team goes through over a particular period of time is not always indicative of success, it is usually a decent barometer for measuring and predicting a team’s play throughout the season.

It has clearly correlated with the Browns however, as the team has only escaped a losing record twice since 1995. There are certainly some valid criticisms of Kizer, from his football maturity to his starting record, but there are also many things to like about the young rookie.

Here are a few reasons why the Browns made the right call in naming Kizer their starter.

3. He’s not Brock Osweiler

This is not a slight to Osweiler as he proved himself capable of at least holding down the fort for a team, but that just wasn’t going to cut it for the Browns. Is Osweiler a decent game manager? Perhaps. Was deciding between Kizer and Osweiler more difficult than some might suggest? Of course.

See, while we as fans hope that our team is consistently putting out the best players game after game regardless of politics, that simply isn’t the case. For some teams that is not the case. However, other teams that don’t fare so well on the field often turn to unconventional methods in order to fill the seats.

In a vacuum, Kizer was the clear choice. That is if the vacuum only accounted for the fan experience, of course. While Osweiler may have had the best chance to win games for the team (and I’m not saying that is the case), he was old news.

Osweiler had already been seen before, whether in Denver or on the Texans, and the fan consensus was that he was nothing more than average. While an average quarterback may have been better than many of the Browns previous options, fans already knew what they were getting. Kizer, however, offers a hope that Browns fans wouldn’t necessarily get in Osweiler.

Unfortunately, Browns fans have been hearing the word ‘hope’ for all too long. While almost all of their recent quarterback draftees haven’t really panned out, settling for hope in a rookie is much more exciting than settling hope in what seems to be an early journeyman quarterback.
