Wisconsin Football: 3 things to watch vs. Utah State
2. Aggies’ rushing attack
The rushing attack of the Aggies will be a huge part of the success of this offense this season. Not only do they have a wide variety of backs they use, but quarterback Kent Myers also poses as a threat on the ground as well. In fact, Myers was second on the team in rushing yards in 2016.
Senior back Tonny Lindsey returns for the Aggies and will likely be the starter moving forward, despite the probably plan of using multiple backs. Utah State has had eight straight seasons of at least 2,000 yards rushing for the year and are primarily a run-first team. Lindsey, a quick tailback, averaged over five yards per carry on the year in 2016 and could be a threat in the backfield with Myers and their spread offense scheme.
Lindsey will be backed up by two skilled players in Lajuan Hunt and Justen Hervey, both of which have game experience on their resume. Hunt will likely be the main guy splitting carries with Lindsey.
Utah State lost just one player from their backfield from last season, Devante Mays, who was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in round seven of the NFL Draft.
“Fall camp has been competitive and I’m really pleased with the way the room is coaching each other and competing with each other,” said special teams coordinator and running backs coach Mark Tommerdahl via Utah State athletics.
It will be an interesting matchup to see how the linebackers and front seven of Wisconsin handle the speed and quickness of Lindsey and Myers in the backfield. Utah State will likely throw many different looks and reads at the Badgers defense and if the Aggies can get their ground game moving early, it will take a lot of pressure off not only their defense, but Myers in the passing game as well.
