Washington football was supposed to have their way with Rutgers on Friday night. The Scarlet Knights are within one score at half time.

Jake Browning is not having a very good night against the Knights. In his first game back from offseason shoulder surgery the Washington quarterback has been almost a non-factor against Rutgers through the first two quarters of the game.

Rutgers jumped out to an early lead against the Huskies on a 3-yard Kyle Bolin touchdown pass. The Louisville transfer connected with Janarion Grant to score the game’s opening touchdown. Rutgers had not scored first in any of their games last season.

Then it was the Rutgers defense that kept the Knights in the game. They gave Browning a beating, pinning him against the turf and only allowing him to connect on one long pass in the first half.

Yikes. The Scarlet Knights were the aggressor through the first half of this game. Washington had three three-and-outs in their first five drives. Rutgers had just two, but the final one proved to be costly. Washington return man took a deep Rutgers 61 yards to the house to give the Huskies their first lead of the game.

Browning would finish the first half 5-for-11 for 81 yards. Washington was outgained by Rutgers 148 to 97. One year ago the Huskies blasted the Scarlet Knights 48-13. That Rutgers team went 2-10. The 2017 squad has their eyes set on what could be a one of the biggest wins in program history.

Rutgers would miss what would have been a game-tying field goal with less than a minute remaining in the first half. They trail Washington 10-7 but the Scarlet Knights have to feel like they’re right where they want to be.
