Tennessee vs Georgia Tech will cap off the Labor Day weekend of college football. There is no better way to end the Week 1 than SEC vs ACC football.
All eyes will be on this matchup. Both Tennessee and Georgia Tech are in prime underdog position to win their division. The Volunteers play in the parody-filled wide up SEC East. And the Yellow Jackets look to reclaim the ACC Coastal. But before those teams get into conference play, they will meet each other on Sept. 4 in Atlanta’s new Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Not much of neutral site for the Tennessee Volunteers.
On this Labor Day, here are three things to watch for during Tennessee vs Georgia Tech:
1. Paul Johnson’s record vs. SEC
Paul Johnson has a weird relationship against SEC teams. Every year, he does have the annual rivalry game against Georgia, which he is 3-6 in. His overall record against the SEC is 10-8 at Georgia Tech.
But since the start of this decade he is 5-6. Last year, he got it together and he is now on a three game winning streak against the SEC.
His old school offense that many teams do not see a lot will always play into his favor, but the Vols have had all summer to get ready for that triple option attack.
This game will test his ability to get over his up and down record against the SEC. It is also important to point out that during his current three game winning streak he has played SEC teams that run 3-4 defenses. The Vols run a base 4-2 nickel defense.
