Texas football, under the direction of new head coach Tom Herman, is laying an egg at home. The Longhorns trail Maryland 30-14 at half time.

The Longhorns parted ways with head coach Charlie Strong after a tumultuous 2016 season. That forgettable year included a loss to Kansas, just in case anyone had forgotten. The brought in Houston head coach Tom Herman to turn things around.

Tom Herman won some massive games in his short time at Houston. The Cougars beat Oklahoma in their 2016 season opener and dominated Heisman-winning quarterback Lamar Jackson on the road. They also lost to Navy, SMU and Memphis.

Maryland might not have the cache that the Longhorns do, but they came out ready to play on Saturday. The Terps were three touchdown underdogs on the road (per SBR), but jumped out to an early 28-7 lead on the Longhorns thanks to this long touchdown pass from Tyrrell Pigrome to Taivon Jacobs.

Texas would answer with by returning a blocked field goal for a touchdown. That would be the second non-offensive touchdowns scored by the Longhorns on the day. Both scores belong to defensive back Holton Hill. It was Hill that stepped in front of a Pigrome pass and took it the distance for the Longhorn’s first score of the afternoon.

There is still plenty of football still to be played, but the Longhorns certainly haven’t looked sharp early. A loss to Maryland would quickly sour all of the hope that has been accumulating in Austin for months during the offseason.

Does Texas have enough in the tank to turn things around? Or will the Terps find a way to keep the Horns out of the endzone and pull off the road upset?
