West Virginia football opened the season against Virginia Tech on Sunday night and Will Grier was the center of attention
Opening the season with a nice rivalry game for the Black Diamond Trophy, West Virginia and Virginia Tech met up in Landover, Md., on Sunday night. The atmosphere was electric for the nationally-televised matchup, but many were checking in on one of the more intriguing storylines of Week 1: Will Grier.
How would the former Florida quarterback fare with his new team in his first start since 2015? Early on, it wasn’t great. He struggled to hit receivers in stride and even overthrew a couple of wide open targets.
Then, on a crucial fourth-and-short play, there was this:
Now that the monkey is off his back, maybe he can settle down and lead the offense effectively. It seems as if Grier is still shaking off the rust and he’s trying to force things. Once he settles down, he should be able to pick apart defenses, but Virginia Tech is giving him all he can handle.
Grier went the entire first quarter with the Mountaineers without a pick, but in the first play of the second frame, that changed. First-game jitters are to be expected, especially when you haven’t played a game in two years.

The Mountaineers and Hokies are playing a close contest in the first half, but Grier has to be more clutch in those type of situations. He will learn from his mistakes.
