After throwing an interceptions two drives before, West Virginia football’s Will Grier threw his first touchdown pass with his new team.
Dana Holgorsen made one of the biggest moves last offseason when he landed Florida-transfer quarterback Will Grier. West Virginia was getting set to graduate Skyler Howard after a breakout season and the Mountaineers would have to replace him with someone just as effective to even approach 10 wins again.
Well, they did just that with the quarterback who led Florida to a 6-0 record in 2015 before getting suspended for the rest of the season. Although past PED usage was a concern, fans welcomed Grier with open arms and expectations ran high prior to Sunday’s opener against Virginia Tech.
Would Grier be able to live up to the unfair expectations?
After a shaky start versus the Hokies, including a crucial fourth-down interception, he rebounded with an impressive touchdown pass to David Sills.
The transfer quarterback made a tremendous back-shoulder throw to Sills. He put it where only his wide out could make the catch and that’s the type of confidence fans and experts were hoping to see in Week 1. He broke the 100-yard passing mark in the first half with the throw and finally got the touchdown monkey off his back.
Grier will now be able to settle down and make the right reads and throws. He doesn’t have to worry about “when” he will get his first touchdown with the Mountaineers.
