Louisville football heated up in the second half against the Purdue Boilermakers to avoid one of the most massive upsets of the weekend.

Few knew what to expect from the No. 16 ranked Louisville Cardinals this year. They have the defending Heisman Trophy winner in junior quarterback Lamar Jackson. But, they also have a tough ACC to compete in.

On the other hand, the Purdue Boilermakers did not really have any level of expectation entering the season. Their quarterback, David Blough, has talent but also turns the ball over more than most quarterbacks in the country. Blough and Elijah Sindelar combined for four touchdowns through the air.

Louisville has the talent and the polarizing player behind center to win the ACC and make a spirited run at the College Football Playoff. However, Jackson put way too much of the pressure on the offense on his own shoulders last year. He needs to trust his teammates more.

Purdue controlled the pace of play over Louisville in the first half. It took the Cardinals a while to get up to speed and look like themselves in the second half. Louisville outscored Purdue 25-14 in the second half.

Barely escaping with a victory, Louisville might actually slide down in the top 25 rankings. The AP Poll judges a lot of teams based on quality of competition and overall performance in the early weeks. Purdue is not a great team and Louisville did not perform well overall. It could cost them a few spots.

Louisville takes on the North Carolina Tar Heels next week. UNC lost to Cal in their Week 1 game. It’ll be a true test for Louisville to see what they really have.

Now, let’s take a look at five overreactions from Louisville’s Week 1 victory over Purdue.
