Tennessee football made one of the biggest plays of Week 1 as it blocked a Georgia Tech field goal to force overtime.
Week 1 of the college football season has been absolutely wild. Not only have there been upsets and major comebacks, but teams have been going down to the wire. Monday night’s Labor Day showdown between Tennessee football and Georgia Tech was no exception.
The Volunteers scored on a John Kelly touchdown run with just over a minute left in the game after forcing a big fumble deep in their own territory. Following that score, Georgia Tech methodically marched down the field and set itself up for a chip-shot field goal.
Tennessee, though, was having none of it:
This is just yet another example of why college football is great. The first weekend of the season has brought many close games and highlight plays. Tennessee fought its way back from a 28-14 deficit late in the game to force overtime — thanks to that field goal rejection.
Butch Jones and the Volunteers entered the game ranked in the top 25, but a loss would surely drop them out. The offense has yet to really hit its stride with Quinten Dormady, but Kelly has been solid in the backfield.
Still, this will be remembered as one of the biggest plays of the season if the Vols are able to hold on for the opening game victory.
