After a heartbreaking loss at the hands of UCLA, is Texas A&M football’s Kevin Sumlin on his way out of College Station?

Before the 2017 season began, Texas A&M football coach Kevin Sumlin was already on the hot seat. The Aggies’ athletic department had backed him, giving him a chance to prove himself despite failing in November seemingly every season.

However, he looked to remove himself completely from the ranks of the warm-seated coaches in the first half of the UCLA opener. His Aggies held a 38-10 lead at halftime and extended it to 44-10 in the third quarter. The Aggies looked like a serious SEC title contender and potentially a dark-horse playoff threat.

Then the second-half woes struck. Poor play on the defensive side of the ball, namely against the pass, led to an epic collapse. Sumlin’s Aggies fell to the Bruins, 45-44, in one of the craziest comebacks you’ll ever see.

At least one Texas A&M Board of Regents member, Tony Buzbee, is on the “#FireSumlin” train after the UCLA loss.

While he admitted he’s only one person with a single vote, he does seem to share the same mindset as most of the Texas A&M fan base. The Aggies feel as if they deserve better at the head coaching position, and he’s right.

This program has the potential to be great, especially with how well Sumlin recruits, but constant meltdowns on a national stage won’t help matters. The only way to move forward is addition by subtraction, in Buzbee’s eyes.

Does this mean it’s the beginning of the end for Sumlin in College Station? Entirely possible. When a Board of Regents member calls you out, personally, for being out-coached, you can bet that the rest of the board is on the same page.

It may be a matter of days before Sumlin is let go. For now, he has to play the waiting game.
