1. The Hokies offense is in good hands under Josh Jackson

Quarterback Josh Jackson had a strong debut in the Virginia Tech Hokies’ season opening victory. The redshirt freshman quarterback had 235 passing yards, a passing touchdown and 101 rushing yards and a touchdown in the Hokies’ 31-24 victory.

Jackson showed a lot of poise and leadership in his first start. The offense used a good balance of the run and the pass  to keep the Mountaineers’ defense guessing.

When the play called for him to unload his arms, he did just that. He connected with wide receiver Cam Phillips on seven receptions for 138 receiving yards and a touchdown.

The Virginia Tech Hokies also had 234 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns in the game. Jackson lead the way for the running game while running back Deshawn McClease had eight carries for 51 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Running back Travon McMillian had nine carries for 34 rushing yards and a touchdown. He scored the game-deciding touchdown with 6:30 remaining in the game.

Kicker Joey Slye missed two field goals in the game (32 and 38 yards).

Other than that, the team didn’t make a whole lot of mistakes. There were a few points in the game where the offense stalled, but the halftime adjustments came through for the Hokies in the end.
