Longhorn letdowns, an SEC power does the unthinkable and Florida State’s quest to return to the College Football Playoff will be even tougher after Week 1.

The first week of a new college football season brings the weird out from the college football world. From teams wearing new uniforms to struggling against lesser opponents, it’s really hard to take things as seriously as some do after the first week of action.

However, there are a few things that we do each week during the regular season. Those lessons, week by week eventually give us the results from conference supremacy to the Heisman trophy. So what did we learn from the first week in college football?

Florida State’s NY6 hopes are on life support

Even with the loss on Saturday, Florida State’s hopes for reaching the New Year’s Six and Playoff were going to be shaken, but not completely gone. All the hope went directly on life support Sunday afternoon as Florida State announced that quarterback Deondre Francois would be out for the rest of the season with a torn patella tendon. It’s awful news for a team that really had a decent showing against Alabama and now they’ve got to soldier on without their starting quarterback.

Florida State puts their faint NY6 hopes in the hands of freshman James Blackmon who came in for the injured Francois. Blackmon’s next pass against Louisiana Monroe will be his first ever pass attempt in college, oh and he’s got Miami at home the week after that. Good luck James, you’re going to need it.

People are wanting to bury Florida State’s chances to make the Playoff and even reach the New Year’s Six. Yes, the chances are very slim but we should not completely take them out of any discussion. Right now I would still slot them into a NY6 bowl, more than likely the Orange Bowl, but a lot will chance assuredly after the upcoming game with Miami in a little under two weeks in Tallahassee.
