Boise State solidified its position at No. 2 in the Group of Five Power Rankings by gutting out a tough win over fellow New Year’s Six dreamer Troy. But there are still plenty of question marks surrounding the Broncos as they turn toward a tougher opponent in Week 2. Against the Trojans, Alexander Mattison looked great as the new starter at running back. Mattison finished with 82 yards on 13 carries, including a 49-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter.

What seemed shaky was Boise State’s quarterback play, albeit against a good Troy secondary. Brett Rypien completed 13 of his 23 passes for just 160 yards on the day. He had no touchdowns, but did throw an interception that was returned 53 yards the other way by Blace Brown for a Troy score.

When he saw the field, Kansas graduate transfer Montell Cozart looked far more polished running Boise State’s offense. Cozart finished 6-of-9 for 50 yards and a score, while adding 36 rushing yards. There isn’t likely going to be a quarterback controversy, but the coaching staff must have some questions if they brought in a one-year guy like Cozart to compete with Rypien.

We will likely see both quarterbacks in Week 2 when the Broncos face one of their biggest tests of 2017. Boise State heads to Pullman for a showdown against a ranked Washington State team. The Pac-12 North contenders looked great in their opener against FCS Montana State and could cause problems for a Broncos team dreaming of another historic season.
