Miami football has cancelled their home game on Saturday with Arkansans State because of safety concerns caused by Hurricane Irma.

With the devastation caused to Houston and the Gulf Coast by Hurricane Harvey, Miami has decided to take all precautions to ensure the safety of its players in fans. Even if that means no football.

The Hurricanes are fresh off a win in their season opener against Bethune-Cookman. They were originally scheduled to play Arkansas State this coming Saturday. That contest will no longer be happening. There have been no reports of the game being rescheduled. It’s a non-conference, non-Power 5 opponent, so there isn’t likely to be a makeup game as was the case when Florida and LSU were forced to cancel a game due to weather in 2016.

Miami had some ups and some downs in Week 1 and could really have used one more tune-up game before taking on the Florida State Seminoles in Week 3. Even without their starting quarterback, lost for the season against Alabama, the Noles defense is still one of the best units in college football.

The Hurricanes and quarterback Malik Rosier would have benefited from a few more reps. That’s off the table now. Miami is going to have to enter what could be their most pivotal game of the year off of just one game of action together as a unit.

Safety is of course the priority. Hopefully the weather will divert as this cancellation will be looked at as over-cautious by this time next week. Either way, it looks like football fans in Florida are going to have to find something else to do on Saturday.
