Big 12 football did not have the best showing in Week 1 for some of its more notable programs, however, this is a new weeks with new possibilities.

The Big 12 ended up having a tough going in Week 1. Their only team that face another top 25 team, the West Virginia Mountaineers, ended up losing after coming up just short on their final drive. More embarrassing was the loss of the Baylor Bears to the Liberty Flames out of the FCS. Liberty’s quarterback outplayed Arizona transfer Anu Solomon completely.

One of the teams in the conference on the biggest stage last week was the Texas Longhorns. First-year head coach Tom Herman took the field for the first time in Austin with the Horns. Texas faced the Maryland Terrapins, out of the Big Ten, on their home turf. Yet, Maryland defeated the Horns 51-41. That defeat knocked Texas out of the top 25 completely, getting no votes at all this week in the AP Poll.

Besides what happened to Texas and Baylor, the Big 12 ended up having a decent week overall. The Oklahoma schools dominated their competition. Oklahoma defeated the UTEP Miners behind a huge effort from senior quarterback Baker Mayfield. Oklahoma State defeated the Tulsa Golden Hurricane behind a huge effort from their entire offense.

The TCU Horned Frogs made their way into the top 25 rankings this week, at No. 23. West Virginia was bounced from the top 25 after losing to Virginia Tech. Kansas State notched themselves an impressive victory over Central Arkansas (even though it was against an FCS team).

Nine of the 10 Big 12 teams are in action this week. The Texas Tech Red Raiders are the only team that has a bye week.

Now, let’s take a look at 5 Big 12 teams on upset alert in Week 2.
