SEC football looks like it’s in good shape avoiding upsets so far entering Week 2, but don’t completely rule them out.
The SEC went relatively unscathed in the upset department in the opening week of the 2017 season. The conference went 11-2 in Week One. The Florida Gators and Texas A&M Aggies fell to their respective opponents.
The Vanderbilt Commodores made easy work of the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders, winning 28-6. Quarterback Kyle Shurmur had a big day passing for 296 yards and three passing touchdowns in the victory.
The 15th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs made quick work of the Appalachian State Mountaineers 31-10, although they will lose quarterback Jacob Eason this week against Notre Dame. He left their season opener with a knee sprain and is week-to-week.
The first-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide escaped their opener with 10th-ranked Florida State unscathed. They won 24-7 despite a sluggish showing on offense against a solid defense.
The Tennessee Volunteers won their game against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 42-41 in double-overtime, but they were outplayed all game long.
The Volunteers defense surrendered 535 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns against the Georgia Tech.
The surprise of the week was the South Carolina Gamecocks. They won a hard fought back-and-forth game 35-28 over the NC State Wolfpack in Charlotte. They didn’t get any love in the AP Poll rankings but a victory over Missouri this week could change things.
Here’s a look at the five teams on upset alert in Week 2.
