West Virginia Football: 5 reasons the Mountaineers defeat ECU
The West Virginia football program heads home to Mountaineer Field to take on the East Carolina Pirates, who won three games last year.
The West Virginia Mountaineers have a huge chance to notch their first win of the season in Week 2 when they take on the East Carolina Pirates. West Virginia took the loss in Week 1 to the Virginia Tech Hokies in Landover, MD.
Florida transfer quarterback Will Grier played well in his first game with the Mountaineers. Grier totaled 423 yards and three touchdowns with just one interception. He was one drive short of leading West Virginia to tying Virginia Tech.
One of the biggest problems for West Virginia facing Virginia Tech was shutting down redshirt freshman quarterback Josh Jackson. The Mountaineers only allowed 235 yards and one touchdown through the air. Jackson beat them on the ground. He rushed for 101 yards and one touchdown. Virginia Tech notched 234 rushing yards and three touchdowns as a team.
East Carolina does not have the same sort of dual threat quarterback as Virginia Tech had with Jackson. West Virginia should not have the same problem stopping their offense. This is truly an opportunity for the Moutaineers to dominate an FBS opponent.
Last week, ECU was defeated by the former FCS National Champions James Madison. ECU was never really in the game and JMU ran away with a 20-point victory. This is not a team that is likely to compete in the American Athletic Conference this year.
Now, let’s take a look at five reasons why the West Virginia Mountaineers will defeat the East Carolina Pirates in Week 2.
