On Friday night on the road against South Alabama, Oklahoma State football quarterback Mason Rudolph broke Brandon Weeden‘s school passing record.

Rudolph already has two years as the Oklahoma State starter under his belt. That made it a bit easier for him to break Weeden’s record, which he did during the second quarter against South Alabama on Friday. Rudolph entered the game with 9,017 yards passing, 58 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

The former record holder, Brandon Weeden, blew away Big 12 defenses too. He finished his career with 9,260 yards, 75 touchdowns and 27 interceptions in his four-year career. He was the full-time starter for just two years.

Rudolph has the record, but he isn’t done. Now he’ll look to stretch it. He’d already thrown for 200 yards and two touchdowns before breaking the record midway through the Pokes’ game on Friday. That included a 66 yard touchdown pass to All-Big 12 receiver James Washington and a short 4-yard strike to Marcell Ateman for his second touchdown of the night.

Driving Oklahoma State down the field once more, Rudolph hit Chris Lacey  for 15 yards. That pass would officially put him ahead of Brandon Weeden and atop the Oklahoma State record books. That’s the sort of stat that people outside of the program tend to notice. Rudolph finished the night with 335 yards passing and three touchdowns. He now has 9,352 passing yards in his career, and counting.

Weeden would go on to be drafted No. 22 overall by the Cleveland Browns in the 2012 NFL Draft. It didn’t work out for him in Cleveland, but he’s still bouncing around the league as a backup quarterback.

Rudolph has NFL aspirations as well. Where things stand right now he looks to be a fringe first round talent, but if he keeps shattering records and having a stellar senior season he will begin to climb up draft boards. Rudolph has the size, the arm and the poise of an NFL quarterback. Now he owns the top of the Cowboys’ passing leaderboard. Next stop, the big leagues.
