Clemson football hosted Auburn on Saturday evening in one of the biggest matchups of Week 2. The first half has been a defensive battle.
Saturday was a big day for Clemson football as the Tigers worked on their campaign to win back-to-back titles with a contest against a top SEC for. Auburn came to town to do battle and it was clear early on that it would be a defensive battle.
Although the Auburn Tigers boasted one of the nation’s best young quarterbacks in Jarrett Stidham, the Clemson secondary looked to be one of the best in the nation. In fact, Stidham got away with a couple of potential interceptions on dropped passes by defensive backs.
Kelly Bryant started off playing well, passing for 106 yards on 11-of-16 completions, but a big hit knocked him out of the game. Zerrick Cooper entered the game for the first-year starter and attempted two passes before Bryant returned to give the Tigers a 7-6 lead right before the half.
Many believe both of these teams could contend for their respective conference titles and it could even be a College Football Playoff preview. Early on, it lived up to the billing, but it definitely wasn’t the offensive showdown of the week.
Just how good was each defense in the first half? Clemson held Auburn to just 102 first-half yards and no touchdowns. Auburn held Clemson to 128 yards and a late touchdown.
