The Michigan football program barely escaped a close call in the first half with the Cincinnati Bearcats just one week after a big win over the Florida Gators.
The No. 8 ranked Michigan Wolverines had a close one for most of the game against the Cincinnati Bearcats. Michigan’s home opener at the “Big House” did not go as planned. Quarterback Wilton Speight struggled to find much consistency leading the offense but made a good push in the second half.
However, Michigan pulled away in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. The Wolverines went out a 12-0 run in the final quarter to ultimately finish with a 36-14 win. Head coach Jim Harbaugh showed his prowess with locking down the game late.
It’s hard to tell how good Michigan actually is this year. On one hand, they were able to defeat the Florida Gators handily, 33-17, on the national stage. They also overcame a quality Group of Five opponent in Cincinnati in their home opener.
Overall, it’s been a solid start to the 2017 campaign for the Wolverines. They beat a top 25 ranked team in Week 1 and showed resilience in Week 2 with a 22-point win. This is a team that could eventually compete for a berth in the College Football Playoff. However, they do need to make some positive strides before that can happen.
Next week, Michigan faces the Air Force Falcons in their final non-conference game of the season. Air Force has only faced VMI so far. And they defeated the Keydets 62-0 in their season opener. It could be another big test for the Wolverines in Week 3.
Now, let’s take a look at three things we learned from Michigan’s victory over the Cincinnati Bearcats.
