Wisconsin football is now 2-0 on the season after handing Florida Atlantic their second loss. Here are three takeaways from today’s battle in Madison.
In a game that many expected to be yet another blowout in Wisconsin’s favor, Florida Atlantic kept it close before faltering in the second half. There were both questions and answers that arose over the course of this game, and Wisconsin will look to continue their solid play in light of them.
With yet another game in the books, here are three things to take away from what looked to be another routine win for the No. 9 Wisconsin Badgers.
3. The Badgers have found something in running back Jonathan Taylor
There was much hype surrounding quarterback Alex Hornibrook after he pried the starting job away from teammate Bart Houston early last season. However, it seems to be the true freshman Taylor who is stealing the show so far.
Both Hornibrook and Taylor shined against a mediocre Utah State squad, with the latter posting 87 yards and a score on only nine carries. Redshirt sophomore Bradrick Shaw saw fewer yards on more carries than Taylor, finishing with 86 yards on 18 carries. Both players also found the end zone once on the day.
The backfield is cluttered in Wisconsin, with Taylor, Shaw, and redshirt junior Chris James all fighting for carriers. Taylor, taking advantage of Shaw’s leg injury, played exceptionally well in today’s game, finishing with 26 rushes, 223 yards, and three touchdowns.
Taylor was benched for a few plays in the wake of a third quarter fumble, but was then was handed back the reins on the following possession. He proceeded to receive five straight carries before finally finding his way into the end zone.
The Badgers now have a decision to make in regard to their running back situation. With Hornibrook showing some potential problems early, Wisconsin would love to find a back who could take some pressure off their signal caller. They might just have found their answer in Jonathan Taylor.
