Texas A&M Football: Nicholls St win confirms three major issues
Kevin Sumlin and Texas A&M football came out slow and barely edged the Nicholls Colonels 24-14, a week after the collapse at UCLA.
More: 10 numbers that show how dire the situation at Texas A&M has become
The Aggies failed to cover the 34 point spread against FCS whoarethey Nicholls. Nicholls State is located in Thibodaux, LA and yes I had to google that fact. The Aggies only led 14-6 at halftime and it was tied up 14-14 in the 4th quarter.
Texas A&M was clinging to the 20th spot on the S&P+ even after the UCLA 34 point fiasco. I’m usually of the belief that coaches being fired mid-season, and on the Facebook hot seat during Week 1, is a reactionary mess reserved for the Reverb hotline.
Sumlin’s record is 44-22 as the head coach of the Aggies. College Station hasn’t had a history of recent success beyond Sumlin. When Sumlin won 11 games in 2012 it was the first double-digit winning season for the 12th man since RC Slocum’s squad won 11 games in 1998. Kevin Sumlin’s team needs to improve, especially after hiring Noel Mazzone away from UCLA and John Chavis away from LSU. Those were major coordinator hires for the other team in Texas.
That said, sometimes you have to call a spade a spade. Here are my three takeaways from an Aggies team only able to beat Nicholls State by 10 with a late game field goal.
