LSU football hosted Chattanooga on Saturday evening and the game was a blowout in the Tigers’ favor. What’d we learn?
No, it wasn’t a marquee matchup, but LSU football took care of business against Chattanooga and you can always learn things about a team no matter the opponent. Chattanooga isn’t going to threaten FBS powerhouses any time soon, but the Mocs were there to put up a fight.
Although the final score was extremely lopsided, 45-10 in favor of the Tigers, we still learned a few things about this year’s LSU team.
Ed Orgeron took over as the team’s head coach following Les Miles’ firing last season and he is off to a fantastic start to the 2017 season. He’s learning plenty about his team as well, and most of it is positive. He has a veteran quarterback to rely on, a top-tier defense and one of the nation’s top Heisman contenders at running back. What’s not to love?
Let’s take a look at the three things we learned about the Tigers from their Week 2 victory over Chattanooga in Baton Rouge.
3. DJ Chark is the No. 1 receiver
This team has been looking for a true No. 1 receiver to help out Danny Etling on offense and senior wide out D.J. Chark seems to be that guy. Through two games, he leads the team with seven receptions for 180 yards.
Coming into this season, that was one of the major areas of concern. Who would step up in the receiving corps? LSU hadn’t had a solid passing game in a few years and that needed to change with Etling developing more targets.
It looks like Chark is that go-to guy the team has been looking for. He broke the century mark for the first time in a game during his career, catching three passes for 103 yards. He hasn’t shown the ability to be a possession receiver, which is necessary, but he’s certainly a home run threat.
Can he continue to prove his worth as the team’s No. 1 receiver? We’ll soon find out.
