Penn State Football: 5 overreactions from win over Pitt
For the first time since 1999, Penn State football defeated Pitt in Happy Valley. Here are five overreactions from the team’s Week 2 game.
When the Penn State Nittany Lions took the field at Beaver Stadium to face off against the Pitt Panthers for the 98th time in program history, they were out for blood.
After losing to the Panthers last season, in the first matchup since 2000, the Nittany Lions, ranked the No. 4 team in the nation, expected to steamroll a lowly Panther squad that will be lucky to finish the season with a winning record.
However, fans expecting a high-scoring display of offensive dominance by James Franklin squad largely left the stadium feeling underwhelmed.
The Nittany Lions’ defense, which shut out an entirely overwhelmed Akron Zips offense the week before, couldn’t stop the Pitt Panthers offense from moving the ball seemingly at will.
Though the team’s red zone defense did hold the Panthers to only a single touchdown, it’s scary to think of what a more high-powered offense would have been able to accomplish against a similar defensive performance.
While Penn State did ultimately pull out a win against its in-state rival, and No. 2 Ohio State ultimately lost to Oklahoma at home, it’s far from a lock to win the Big Ten for a second year in the row if they continue to deliver sub-par defensive performances..
With that in mind, sometimes it’s fun to overreact to the little things in a game, so here are five complete overreactions to Penn State’s Week 2 victory over Pitt.
