The Texas defense and special teams are still a huge question mark

Despite promises of being better and more complete, it was the same old story for the Texas defense and special teams against Maryland. They gave up a touchdown on a blocked field goal, missed a couple more and the defense, like shown below, was simply battered by Maryland giving up big play after big play.

They stepped up versus San Jose State, delivering the shut out Texas so desperately needed. However, there are question marks that eclipse any strong performance. Can the Texas special teams shape up? Can they keep up with the offensive attack of teams like Oklahoma, USC and Oklahoma State? From what they have shown so far this season, the answer to that one is a big no. However, only time will tell.

On the bright side, Texas did have three non-offensive touchdown’s against Maryland- an interception return, a field goal return and a punt return. However that wasn’t enough to make up for their failures to stop an offense that was a three touchdown underdog and held a 17 game losing streak to ranked opponents. They also had an interception return for six against San Jose State.

Whether Texas deserved to be ranked to start the season is a different argument for a different day. All we know right now is that the question marks may be too big to overcome this season.
