Washington football had the closest thing to a bye in Week 2. Here are five overreactions from the easy victory over Montana.

Another victory for Chris Petersen and Washington football took place on Saturday evening as the Huskies had no trouble dismantling Montana, 63-7. The Huskies were dominant in their victory, but it was tough to tell if they had done anything special because their opponent wasn’t exactly elite.

Jake Browning had another solid game and the run game put up over 200 yards, but what needs to be worked on? It seems as if this team is coming together quite nicely and those who picked USC to win the Pac-12 should be on notice because the Huskies aren’t going anywhere.

The reigning conference champs took a 35-7 lead into halftime and tacked on 28 more points, eventually taking out the starters in lieu of backups such as K.J. Carta-Samuels under center. Washington did what it was expected to do, but that hasn’t stopped fans from overreacting.

Let’s take a look at the five biggest overreactions from the Huskies’ win over Montana.

5. Defense is better than last year’s

Last year’s Washington defense was the best in the entire Pac-12 and a top-15 unit, nationally. The secondary was impressive but multiple players left for the NFL following the 2016 season. That meant that the defensive side of the ball would take a major hit.

However, through two games, that hasn’t been the case. The Huskies allowed just 31 rushing yards and 132 passing yards to Montana in the convincing win. The only touchdown that the Grizzlies had was a pick-six in the first quarter. No offensive touchdowns allowed all game. This defense has to be better than last year’s, right?

Pump the brakes, people.

While the Huskies have plenty of talent returning to this side of the ball and potentially bigger stars in the making, the Huskies haven’t played an offense with a pulse. Rutgers did not exactly feature a potent attack.

This defense is good once again with guys like Taylor Rapp, Azeem Victor, Keishawn Bierria, JoJo McIntosh and Vitae’sa Vea, among others, but let’s wait until it faces the likes of UCLA, Oregon, Stanford and Washington State.
