The Boise State football program notched a big win on Sep. 14 over one of the best teams in the Mountain West Conference in the New Mexico Lobos.

The Boise State Broncos won 17 straight conference home openers previous to tonight’s game. However, the New Mexico Lobos gave the Broncos all they could handle in what was a very entertaining matchup on national television. They finished with a 28-14 win.

It was great exposure for the Mountain West to get two of their better football programs on national television in a big Thursday night game. Any Group of Five conference that can get the national attention proves to be very rewarding.

This was Boise State’s first game of the season without star quarterback Brett Rypien who was injured against the Washington State Cougars. In his place, former Kansas transfer quarterback Montell Cozart got the start.

Boise State head coach Bryan Harsin is getting some rumors of looks from Power Five programs in dire situations. Harsin is not only fighting for his chance to get the Broncos back to the level that former head coach Chris Peterson had them at, but he’s fighting for his own reputation.

Tonight, he showed that he knows how to coach in clutch time. That will set him apart from a lot of the other Group of Five coaches. He also has a football program in Boise State that consistently competes at a high level.

The next four matchups for Boise State present a huge challenge. Two of those four games include a Power Five program and the BYU Cougars. Meanwhile, New Mexico faces the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, then gets into the thick of their conference schedule.

Now, let’s take a look at three things we learned from Boise State’s victory over New Mexico.
