Oklahoma football stunned the nation by upsetting Ohio State. Baker Mayfield celebrated on midfield with the OU Flag. Asking him to apologize is ridiculous.

College football is the greatest sport in America. There is something that an underdog in this sport that galvanizes that masses into believing that even for a moment, anything is possible. The Sooners weren’t a longshot the likes of Liberty or Howard, but pulling out a win in Columbus, Ohio was stunning.

To celebrate the one of the biggest wins of his collegiate career, Oklahoma Sooner quarterback Baker Mayfield took an OU flag out to the middle of Ohio Stadium and gave it a good wave. To cap off the hoorah, he planted the flag in the center of the Ohio State O, right on the 50-yard line.

This week, after all the euphoria had died down, Mayfield joined the Rich Eisen Show to apologize for his celebratory antics. The full interview is available below.

Mayfield shouldn’t have to say sorry at all

College football is fun. That’s why we watch it. That’s why a hundred of thousand flock to see even a mediocre Texas A&M team every Saturday at Kyle Field. They’re waiting with anticipation to see Auburn’s War Eagle circle the stadium. Fans cheer as the “I” is dotted on the script Ohio by the Buckeyes’ band.

If you take the fun out of college football you removed one of the most essential elements of the game. College football without fun starts to look a lot more like the NFL, which has jokingly been referred to as the “no fun league”.

Mayfield’s flag plant wasn’t malicious and it wasn’t dangerous. It was just fun. Let kids be kids and let college football be fun again. He shouldn’t have to apologize for an innocent, fun act. But that’s the world we live in. What do you think? Was the flag a step to far? Should Mayfield be free to celebrate with his teammates after a top-5 upset on the road?
