3. TCU’s first quarter performance was one mistake after another

What a tough first quarter for the TCU Horned Frogs. Offensive coordinator Joe Craddock’s 25th ranked SMU passing offense came out swinging against the 20th ranked Horned Frogs. They scored 16 points in the first 15 minutes of action alone. Instead of matching them blow-for-blow, Gary Patterson’s TCU squad instead found themselves the subject of a series of unfortunate events.

On the Horned Frog’s second drive of the game, senior quarterback Kenny Hill tossed the ball to junior wide receiver KaVontae Turpin. He botched the exchange and fumbled the ball. That ultimately set up a first and goal for the Mustang’s offense and resulted in a quick 16-7 deficit.

Next, TCU attempted a 50-yard field goal. After calling a timeout to ensure the play would go off without a hitch, in a stroke of pure irony, the TCU holder bobbled the snap. SMU took over at the 50 yard line and tacked on a field goal, making the Frogs’ deficit 19-7 after the first frame.

In a shootout between two high-powered, air-raid offenses it’s vital to win not only the physical game, but also the mental one. In the first quarter of TCU’s rivalry bout against in-state rivals SMU, the Horned Frogs defeated themselves.
