Several big-name players suffered losses in Week 3. How did the string up upsets impact the Heisman Trophy race midway through September?

The upsets began early on Saturday in Week 3 and kept coming late into the night on the west coast. Star players across the country bombed in big performances and lowered their stock in major award races. Three of the five quarterbacks that featured prominently on the Week 2 Heisman Trophy Watch suffered upsets or near-upsets.

As a result of all the wins and losses, big days and big disappointments, this week’s Heisman Trophy Watch shifts around a bit. One running back returns to the list, another makes an inaugural appearance, and Bedlam quarterbacks take center stage in the race.

The Heisman Trophy isn’t necessarily won in September, but September showings are as critical to building a campaign as contests later in the season. Heismans can be lost in September, and unexpected stars can emerge in the opening month as well. September, after all, is what propelled last year’s winner Lamar Jackson into the spotlight.

At the quarter point of the season, which stars are separating from the rest of the nation’s players after the first three weeks? Click ahead to read more about the top five players in the race in our Week 4 Heisman Trophy Watch.
