The Irish shut down Boston College’s offensive attack often and early to start the game, but began to allow some big plays here and there as their own offense continued to sputter. Similar to the defensive line, there was never a time when the secondary appeared out of control, but there were still moments when they could’ve looked a lot better.

Shaun Crawford was the Jekyll and Hyde for the Irish, as he was involved in all three turnovers forced by the Irish but struggled to cover wide receiver Charlie Callinan who brought in seven receptions for 82 yards and two scores.

Much frustration was directed at the Irish secondary during this time, but most of it derived from lingering irritation with an inconsistent Irish offense. The defense as a whole suffered from a sporadic Irish offense, but picked up their play as the offense picked up theirs.

It was a poor passing day for both squads as Notre Dame only put up 96 yards through the air themselves. It’s never a good thing to get out-passed by Boston College, but we’re going to put this one on the offense.

At the end of the day, the Irish secondary did its job. There were things that went right and things that went wrong. Look for defensive coordinator Mike Elko to try to further iron out the kinks against Michigan State next week.
