4. Brandon Wimbush is back on track

It’s not easy to bring up the flaws of a player who just set a Notre Dame quarterback rushing record, but Brandon Wimbush’s performance by no means quells the concern about his ability to pass the football.

Wimbush completed less than half of his passes for only 96 yards on the day. He was unable to record a touchdown through the air and coughed up a fumble to go along with an ill-advised interception. The pass, although tipped, was a casualty of one of Wimbush’s many over-throws.

However, let’s not take anything away from Wimbush’s day on the ground. He was nothing short of exceptional and likely proved to future opponents the necessity to respect his running ability. Hopefully this allows them to open things up through the air, but it’s unlikely as the Irish offense struggled in that manner despite their success on the ground.

Wimbush managed more passing yards against Georgia likely due to gameflow, and it was surprising to see the Irish stay away from the pass given the position they were in to iron out the kinks.

Overall, Wimbush had a great day all things considered. But he wasn’t able to silence the critics who called him out last week for his inability to pass. The Irish will face a tougher defense against Michigan State next week, a game in which Wimbush will have the chance to once again put the doubts of analysts behind him.
