Mississippi State is 3-0 coming into its Week 4 matchup against also undefeated Georgia football.
The Battle of the Bulldogs takes place Saturday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. ET in Athens, Ga. Mississippi State, coming off its upset win over LSU, heads to Sanford Stadium to take on 11th-ranked Georgia football. Dan Mullen has been searching for a way out of Starkville for quite some time and this could be the season where he finally accomplishes that goal.
Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald has been on fire, throwing for seven touchdowns and only one interception on 586 yards. Fitzgerald has added 240 rushing yards at 7.7 yards per carry and five more touchdowns on the ground.
The team’s rushing stats are eye-popping as well. MSU has rushed for 893 yards in just three games. Aeris Williams carried the ball 23 times for 146 yards against the LSU Tigers and they were no match for Mississippi State losing the game, 37-7.
Georgia hasn’t looked quite as dominant. It edged out a 20-19 win over a Notre Dame team that can’t throw the football. While the Bulldogs did shut down the Irish rushing attack, Brandon Wimbush still threw for over 200 yards against the Dawgs’ defense.
Sophomore quarterback Jacob Eason is practicing again after his knee sprain suffered against Appalachian State and creates a controversy for the Bulldogs. Georgia has to decide between Eason and freshman Jake Fromm.
According to the S&P+, Mississippi State is no underdog. Bill C’s rankings have MSU ranked 17th overall while Georgia is 19th. I can’t picture the UGA offense being able to score against the MSU defense even with Sony Michel and Nick Chubb in the backfield.
The Michel-Chubb duo could be the nation’s most underutilized backfield in a long time. It’s hard to imagine two NFL talents not being able to get more than 136 yards and a touchdown against Notre Dame’s defense. My first bold prediction has these two in mind.
