After a strong start to his freshman season with Ohio State football, is J.K. Dobbins a better option than Mike Weber?

Last season, running back Mike Weber was redshirt freshman and he was a main clog in the backfield. At times, now-Carolina Panther Curtis Samuel did his thing from the backfield, but he was the Percy Harvin of the 2016 Ohio State football team.

Weber ran for 1,096 yards and nine touchdowns on 182 carries for 6.0 yards per carry average. Not bad for a freshman, right? Coming into his sophomore year everyone expected Weber to be the top back for the Buckeyes, but a hamstring injury slowed him down during summer camp. Not a big deal for a guy with the skill of Weber, right?

Wrong, because of the opportunity provided by the Weber’s injury, freshman running back J.K. Dobbins has made himself a household name for #BuckeyeNation.

During the season opener, Dobbins got the call because of Weber’s injury and what did he do? If you didn’t watch, the young man went off for 181 yards on 29 carries (a record for Ohio State freshmen). He was the spark plug for a struggling offense that night and many, including myself, started to think Dobbins would get touches even when Weber comes back.

In Week 2, Weber played, but Dobbins received more of the workload in a loss against Oklahoma (13-to-3 carries). In Week 3, more of the same happen as Dobbins received more rushes (13-to-4), but this time in a victory, the freshman rushed for 172 yards and two touchdowns. Not too shabby for the LaGrange, Texas, native.

With the success of the true freshman, the question that has been looming around Buckeyes is: who is better, Weber or Dobbins?

It’s difficult to discredit the work of Weber during his freshman year in 2016, but during the first three games of this season, Dobbins does look impressive.

Both are good backs, but I personally like Dobbins’ style more; he has more power than you expect in his 5-foot-10 (generous ), 208-pound frame and has some shake to him that makes guys miss. With a guy like Dobbins, you just need to get him the ball.

While Weber is a talented back also, I’m giving the nod to Dobbins as being the better of the two.

With that being said, the Buckeyes have a luxury of having two quality backs and need to see if they can give both of them solid touches. I may be toeing the fence with some of my statements, but again let’s be clear, give me Dobbins 10 out of 10 times.
