Texas A&M Football: 3 bold predictions for SEC opener vs. Arkansas
By Zach Bigalke
2. A turnover-filled game will ensue at AT&T Stadium
After three games, Texas A&M is second in the nation in generating turnovers. The Aggies have 10 takeaways so far, and they will likely get a few more key steals from the Arkansas offense. Arkansas, to be fair, has been incredible at protecting the football. Austin Allen has had mediocre passing numbers, but he has also tossed only one pick so far this season.
The Razorbacks offense has also lost only one fumble so far. Ball control has been solid so far, but Bret Bielema’s team is going to have worse luck on Saturday at Jerry World. But the turnover battle will likely be a wash, as young quarterback Kellen Mond throws at least one careless pass into coverage. Just as is the case with penalties, this contest is going to bring out the best in both teams’ defenses.
We could also see fumbles in both directions. Given the heated nature of this showdown, the hitting will be especially hard. Last year there were five combined fumbles lost, and that number could be replicated in the 2017 edition.
Look for Santos Ramirez to either pop out a fumble on a strip-sack or snag an interception in coverage. For Texas A&M, freshman cornerback Debione Renfro has been a game-changer at popping footballs loose. He currently ranks ninth nationally with two forced fumbles and one recovery. A late turnover could turn the tide of this contest.
