Vanderbilt played host to Alabama football on Saturday in a battle between undefeated SEC teams. From the opening whistle this one wasn’t even close.

Both the Commodores and Crimson Tide entered the weekend 3-0, but neither beat three cupcakes on their way to game No. 4.

Alabama’s non-conference opponents’ aren’t usually world beaters, but the past two season-openers saw the Crimson Tide take on USC and Florida State. Vanderbilt squared off with Georgia Tech in a non-conference game a season ago, and are fresh off a hard-fought win against the Big 12’s Kansas State Wildcats.

While both schools are in the SEC, Vanderbilt is in the East division with Alabama in the West. Due to the conference’s scheduling, Vanderbilt and Alabama only see each other every few years – unless they meet in the SEC Championship of course.

The last contest between these two? In 2011. AJ McCarron led Alabama to a 34-0 victory. It would end 59-0 this time around, with Nick Saban kneeling out the clock in the redzone and dropping his team just below 500 yards rushing. Here’s our three takeaways from Alabama-Vanderbilt.
