Notre Dame football jumped out to a 14-point lead on the road thanks to a major contribution by their defense in the form of a pick six.

Michigan State is in the midst of rebuilding from a rather forgettable 2016 season. The Spartans finished 3-9 last season with one win in Big Ten play over Rutgers. While it wasn’t a great year for many reasons, the Spartans did beat then No. 18 Notre Dame on the road 36-28. The loss to Michigan State, coming just weeks after the infamous overtime loss to Texas, began a forgotten season for the Irish.

One year removed from the game that sent these two storied programs into obscurity they meet again. The Irish have already been in and out of the top 25 but look to be somewhere near the upper half of the college football standings.

Michigan State doesn’t have the same expectations, but they’ve proven to be a fiesty already in 2016. They downed Western Michigan, a team that gave Top 10 USC fits, with relative ease in Week 2.

The Spartans did not get off to the same comfortable start against the Irish in Week 4. Notre Dame already held a 7-0 lead , courtesy of a Brandon Wimbush 16-yard touchdown run when this happened:

Since then the Irish have extended their lead to 21-7 and the Michigan State offense is officially in catch up mode. At this point last week the Irish were able to pull away from Boston College with relative ease. Will they be able to do the same with the Spartans?

If Michigan State is going to have a chance in this one they’re going to have to find a way to get running back L.J. Scott more involved. Playing from behind is not where the Spartans wanted to be, but asking  Brian Lewerke to keep chucking it may be a recipe for disaster. Stay tuned.
