Baylor Football: Bears put Sooners on Upset Alert late in fourth quarter
By Phil Poling
Baylor football is coming alive in Waco tonight, pushing Big 12-favorite Oklahoma to the brink heading into the fourth quarter.
Opening conference play against Oklahoma (3-0) is a difficult task, but Baylor (0-3) didn’t seem up to it on Saturday. After falling behind 14-0, new starter at quarterback Zach Smith hit Denzel Mims for his first of two touchdowns of the game (so far).
Winning the second and third quarters in the boxscore helped Baylor, outscoring the Sooners 10-7 and 14-7, respectively. But the Baylor defense has struggled all game to slow the Sooners’ run game, allowing over 200 yards. Baker Mayfield‘s been contained for the most part, but big plays down the field are hurting the home team.
The Bears are playing a clean game with zero turnovers and have only committed four penalties to Oklahoma’s seven. Smith’s been an efficient 22 for 31 for 313 yards and three touchdowns as the signal caller, too. How did he not win the job outright to start the season?
If Baylor can complete the upset it would do wonders for their program, while all but ending the Sooners’ College Football Playoff hopes. One loss doesn’t derail a season anymore, especially with the Big 12 title game. But losing to Baylor? That’d be difficult for even the BOOMER Sooners to overcome.

To say this is a surprise would be an understatement. The talk of an 0-8 start to the Baylor season was in full force headed into their matchup with the Sooners on Saturday. Now they’re in a one score game with the mighty Oklahoma at home. Matt Rhule’s team is happy to be in the game, but they won’t be satisfied with a moral victory tonight. Stay tuned.
