Notre Dame Football: 5 overreactions from win over Michigan State
3. Brandon Wimbush is an elite passer
Brian Kelly touched on Brandon Wimbush’s effectiveness in post-game interviews following a big win over Michigan State. He just watched his quarterback complete 14-of-20 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown, which was his most accurate performance of the year.
If you were to look only at the box score, you’d be tempted to say that Wimbush is on his way to becoming an elite passer. Michigan State’s secondary had been one of the better ones in the country over the first couple of weeks and Wimbush was able to complete 70 percent of his passes.
Kelly game-planned perfectly against Michigan State’s aggressive secondary, setting up a plethora of bubble screens and quick slants. Not many of Wimbush’s passes went for more than 20 yards and we didn’t really learn much about his passing ability.
The big knock on Wimbush through three Notre Dame games was that he couldn’t pass effectively or accurately. Despite a solid showing, on paper, against Michigan State, he still has a lot to prove in terms of down-field accuracy and being a threat to burn teams with his arm.
