College Football: 10 notable numbers from Week 5’s early games
The first slate of college football games in Week 5 was rather mediocre. There simply weren’t many great matchups, but there were some intriguing numbers.
The 12 p.m. ET window had plenty of snoozers this week. There weren’t any major upsets, but that’s partly because there weren’t many outstanding games. Florida and Vanderbilt took center stage early on Saturday afternoon and Northwestern was slowly put down by Wisconsin.
Instead of going back and watching the too-bad-to-watch games, here’s a cliff notes version of the morning slate. These are 10 notable numbers from the first few games of Saturday in Week 5.

Time spent trailing to the Aggies of New Mexico State by Arkansas. Coach Bret Bielema still hasn’t figured out a way to beat Texas A&M, but his squad efficiently smothered NMSU in a game that was never quite comfortable.
1
Touchdowns scored by North Carolina against Georgia Tech. It came in the fourth quarter with the Yellow Jackets already leading 27-0
2
Quarterbacks played by Florida and Jim McElwain against Vanderbilt. He had named Luke Del Rio the starter earlier this week, but Feleipe Franks took over after Del Rio was injured in the second quarter. Franks more than outplayed Del Rio, setting up more controversy for the Gators.
3
Ranked teams (No. 10 Wisconsin, No. 18 USF, No. 21 Florida) playing in the early slate of games. None of them played a ranked opponent and the three won their games by a combined 53 points.
5
Rushing touchdowns by the Florida Gators. They had six total offensive touchdowns entering Week 5 and none of them had been scored by the running backs. Lamical Pernine found the endzone on the ground three times, Malik Davis scored twice.
Negative 5
Yards on this punt by South Florida.
7
Punts by Rice against Pitt. The Owls lone touchdown came on a 70-yard, 1-play drive. Outside of that, the offense was downright awful.
22
Combined penalties for 191 yards between Houston and Temple. The two teams also had three combined turnovers in what was a very sloppy game.
61
Points scored by South Florida in a win over East Carolina. The Bulls have routed every opponent they’ve played this season and have yet to score fewer than 31 points in a game this season.
